Every year, the editorial team at Sound On Sound nominates 10 to 20 products in each of the main categories, before asking the readers of SOS to cast their votes to determine the winners. Voting runs from October to the end of November each year, after which the votes are counted and the winning products are selected and announced in the issue following the NAMM show.

Also presented at the Winter NAMM show each year is a special, uncategorized award — ‘The SOS Award’ — selected by the SOS editorial team in recognition of a product or innovation that we believe to be of outstanding merit.
